Resident Research Day Awards

April 2013 for the 2012 year

 
Dr. Colleen Weeks (PGY IV) was awarded Best Basic Clinical Research category for her work on “Risk Factors for Premature Physeal Closure following Salter-Harris Fractures of the Lower Extremity” at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day on April 19th, 2013.

Dr. Khaled Al-Abbasi (PGY IV) was awarded Best Basic Science Research category for his work on “Clinical Efflux of Cryoprotective agents from Vitrified Human Articular Cartilage” at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day on April 19th, 2013.

Dr. Armin Badre (PGYI) was awarded Best Literature Review award for his work on “Epidemiology and Outcome of Meniscectomy and role of Tissue Engineering for Meniscal Replacement” at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day on April 19th, 2013.

Dr. Khaled Al-Mansoori (PGY V) was awarded the ROTA “Resident Outstanding Teacher Award” at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day on April 19th, 2013.

 

 

American Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) Collaborative Exchange Award of 2013

Congratulations to Dr. Adetola B. Adesida who was awarded the American Orthopaedic Research Society ORS Collaborative Exchange Award at the 2013 ORS annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas.
The prestigious ORS Awards are given to individuals with significant contributions to the advancement of orthopaedic research and furthering understanding of the musculoskeletal system and musculoskeletal diseases and injuries.

2012 Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation Research Awards

  • Dr. James McInnes (PGY II) was awarded 1st. place Basic Science category for his work on “ Digestion of Fresh Human Articular Cartilage in the lab: What method is best? A Comparison of two Protocols” at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day on April 13th, 2012.
  • Dr. David Saliken ( PGY II) was awarded 2nd place Basic Science category for his work on “ Decreased Hypertrophic Differentiation Accompanies enhanced Matrix formation in Co-cultures of outer Meniscus cells with Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stromal Cells” at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day on April 13th, 2012.
  • Dr. Ashlee Dobbe (PGYII) was awarded the Junior Resident award for her work on “In Vitro Cartilage Formation Via Co- Culture of Primary and Passaged Chondrocytes with Bone Marrow Stromal Mesenchymal Cells: A Comparative study” at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day on April 13th, 2012.

2011

  • Dr. Khaled Al-Mansoori  (PGY III) was awarded 1st place Clinical Science category for his work on "Randomized Controlled Trial of Topical Lidocaine Analgesic use for Percutaneous Wire Removal in the Paediatric Outpatient" at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day on April 15, 2011   
  • Dr. Matthew Souster (PGY III) was awarded Honorable Mention Clinical Science category for his work on  "Early Mobilization Following Mini-Open Rotator Cuff Repair" at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day on April 15, 2011
  • Dr. Benjamin Herman (PGY II) was awarded 1st.  prize Basic Science category for his work on "Hypoxeia Enhances the Chondrogenic Capacity of Hemarthrosis Derived From Stem Cells" at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day on April 15, 2011

2010

  • Dr. Holman Chan (PGY IV) was awarded 1st place clinical award for his work on reliablity of reviewing shoulder radiographs.
  • Dr. Alexander Rezanoff (PGY II) was awarded 1st prize Basic Science category  for his project reporting on the effect of macrophages on BMP-induced osteogenic induced differentiation of stem cells at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day on April 23, 2010.  
  • Dr. Julian Sernik (PGY III) was awarded 2nd prize Alexandra Kirkley Award Recipient for his paper titled "The Effect of Hypoxia on Chondrocyte Phenotype in Scaffold Repair of Articular Cartilage Defects" at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day on April 23, 2010.
  • Dr. Khaled Almansoori (PGY II) was awarded 2nd prize Basic Science category for his project looking at toxicity of combinations of cryoprotectants on chrondrocytes at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day on April 23, 2010. 
  • Dr. Matthew Souster (PGY II) was awarded Junior Resident award for his project that examined tibial nail reamings as a source for stem cells at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day on April 23, 2010.  

2009

  • Dr. Julian Sernik (PGY II) was awarded 1st prize in the Basic Science category for his paper titled "The Effect of Hypoxia on Chondrocyte Phenotype in Scaffold Repair of Articular Cartilage Defects" at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day on April 24, 2009.
  • Dr. Andrei Manolescu (PGY II) was awarded 2nd prize in the Basic Science category for his paper titled "Identification of a New Generation of Physiological Markers for Mesenchymal Stem Cell Differentiation into Chondrocytes - Acilitative Glucose Transporters" at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day on April 24, 2009.
  • Dr. Roxanne Chow (PGY II) was awarded the Junior Resident award for her paper titled "Proximal Humeral Fracture Fixation Using Intramedullary Fibular Allograft Augmentation of a Locking Plate Construct" at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day on April 24, 2009. 
  • Dr. Charlie Secretan (PGY IV) was awarded 2nd place clinical award for his paper titled "The 5 to 10 year result of a Randomized TKA Study Comparting Patellar Resurfacing and Retention" at the Department of Surgery Research Day on May 8, 2009.

2008

  • Dr. Charlie Secretan (PGY III) was awarded 1st prize in the Basic Science category for his paper titled "Isolation of a CD44 Positive Subpopulation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells with Enhanced Matrix Forming Potential" at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day on April 18, 2008.
  • Dr. Craig Bulawka (PGY III) was awarded 2nd prize in the Basic Science category for his paper titled "What is the Influence of Density on Chondrocyte Characteristics" as the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day on April 18, 2008.
  • Dr. Holman Chan (PGY III) was awarded the Junior Resident award for his paper titled "Injury of the Suprascapular Nerve during Arthroscopic Repair of Superior Labral Tears: An Anatomic Study" at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day on April 18, 2008.

2007

  • Dr. Carlo Panaro (PGY IV) was awarded 1st prize in the Basic Science category for his paper titled "RTPCR Analysis of Human Chondrocytes Maintained in 2D Culture" at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day, April 20, 2007.
  • Dr. Jeff Toreson (PGY II) was awarded 2nd prize in the Basic Science category for his paper titled "DMSO Permeation Kinetics into Intact Porcine Articular Cartilage" at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day, April 20, 2007.

2006

  • Dr. Charlie Secretan (PGY II) was awarded 1st prize in the Basic Science category for his paper titled "Mesenchymal Stem Cells: Isolation, Characterization and Differentiation into Somatic Tissues" at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day, April 21, 2006.
  • Dr. Tim van de Leur (PGY III) was awarded 2nd prize in the Basic Science category for his paper titled "The Effect of Nicotine on Healing of Injured Intervertebral Discs in the Rabbit" at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day, April 21, 2006.
  • Dr. D'Arcy Durand (PGY II) was awarded the Dr. Gary Hughes Research Award for his paper titled "Development of a Study Model and a Possible Repair Option for Acute/Focal Damage to Articular Cartilage" at the Alberta Orthopaedic Research Day, April 21, 2006.
2005
  • Dr. Tim van de Leur (PGY II) was awarded 1st prize in the Basic Science category for his paper titled "The Effects of Melatonin Therapy on the Production and Treatment of Scoliosis in Pinealectomised Chickens" at the Alberta Orthopaedic Resident Research Day, April 15, 2005.
  • Dr. Richard McLeod (PGY III) was awarded 2nd prize in the Basic Science category for his paper titled "Intraobserver Variability of MRI Cartilage Volume Measurement in the Medial Tibial Plateau" at the Alberta Orthopaedic Resident Research Day, April 15, 2005.
  • Dr. Joe Bergman (PGY IV) was awarded 2nd prize in the Clinical Research category for his paper titled "Can Surrogates of Injury Severity be used as a basis for Predicting Infection and Non-union Risk in a Long Bone Compound Fracture Population?" at the Alberta Orthopaedic Resident Research Day, April 15, 2005.
  • Dr. Carlo Panaro (PGY II) was awarded the Gary Hughes Research Award for his paper titled "Retention of Chondrocyte Characteristics in Cultured Chondrocytes" at the Alberta Orthopaedic Resident Research Day, April 15, 2005.

2004

  • Dr. Joe Bergman (PGY III) was awarded 2nd prize for his Clinical Science Paper "A Prospective Analysis of Long-Bone Compound Fractures and Resulting Complications" at the Alberta Orthopaedic Resident Research Day, April 2, 2004. 
  • Dr. Richard McLeod (PGY II) was awarded the Dr. Gary Hughes Junior Resident Research Award for his paper "Vertebral Growth in a Rat Model" at the Alberta Orthopaedic Resident Research Day, April 2, 2004.

2003

  • Dr. Bryan Pimlott (PGY V) received 1st place Linvatec Clinical Research Paper "The Instrumented Rod Rotator System for Spinal Surgery"
  • Dr. Derek Smith (PGY IV) recived 2nd place Dr. Robert Townsend Scientific Award "Melatonin, Scoliosis, and the Chicken that Crossed Her Spine"

2002

  • Dr. Marc Moreau won the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society Founder’s Medal for best research paper at COA in Victoria 2002 - "Development of the Neurocentral Junction as seen on Magnetic Resonance Images"
  • Dr. Marcia Clark (PGY IV): "The Prostalac Hip – The Edmonton Experience" (Annual Orthopaedic Resident Research Day 2002 – 1st Place, Linvatec Clinical Research Paper)
  • Dr. Bryan Pimlott (PGY IV): "In-Hospital Mortality Impact of Nutritional Status in the Hip Fraction Population" (Annual Orthopaedic Resident Research Day 2002 – 2nd Place, Linvatec Clinical Research Paper)
